How to manage your combination skin

If you have dry skin on some areas of your face and greasy on others you probably have combination skin. The oily part of your skin is normally in a T-shape; the forehead, nose and chin, while the rest of your face may be dry. This can seem annoying as most beauty products address a specific skin type but there are things that you can do to look after your skin.

What causes combination skin?

As with most skin types, you inherit combination skin so there’s very little you can do about it. You can make the skin worse by not using the correct products. Your dry parts can become stripped of moisture if using a product for oily skin while your oily parts can worsen if using a product for dry skin.

What products are suitable?

To avoid excess oiliness or dryness you may benefit from using a combination of products. For the oily part of your skin, you should use a lightweight cream or gel containing natural ingredients so you don’t overwhelm the skin. You can use this all over the face as a base. Do not use a product designed for dry skin on this part of your face as this will exacerbate the oiliness.

For the dry areas of your skin layer with an emollient such as Eucerin Aquaphor Soothing Skin Balm to boost the moisture. As with the lightweight cream, make sure you are using cream that won’t cause irritation. Do not use products that strip oil on the dry areas of your skin as this will lead to discomfort and flaking.

Dealing with extreme combination skin

If your skin is very oily and flaking from dryness at the same time then using a layering system will not be adequate. Instead, you should use an oil stripping product just on the T-zone and an emollient on the dry areas such as http://www.lifeandlooks.com/eucerin-aquaphor-soothing-skin-balm.html, making sure that the products don’t overlap.

Other tips for combination skin

Always use a gentle water-based cleanser once a day to clean your skin as excessive cleaning will strip the dry areas. Apply a hydrating toner as this shouldn’t exacerbate the different skin types. Importantly, make sure that you are using a broad-spectrum suncream on your face, at least factor 30. Use a light formulation.
