Just think! What are the expectations from a devi: You should be a giver; you should sacrifice

When this question was asked to an assembly of girls gathered to listen to Her Holiness Anandmurti Gurumaa, in the auditorium of Vivekananda College for girls, there was a mixed response with a few not knowing what to say. So to make them think, Gurumaa said, “When you are asked a question, you should have the courage to answer or else you will become vulnerable to injustice.” Inspired by this, many spoke up. Thus began the talk…

Well, you should never feel good about being called a devi, because then you are not considered even a human being. Your right to be a human being is taken away from you in the name of devi. Just think! What are the expectations from a devi: You should be a giver; you should sacrifice; you should not speak even when faced with injustice, and everything else that can be termed as exploitation. Such is the upbringing of every girl in India! She is conditioned to see herself as weaker than men and to succumb to this male-dominated society. So don’t feel happy to be called a devi; ask for your human rights and avail of them.
I wish to ask you all: Why do you come to college? What is your purpose? Does it only give you the freedom to step out of the four-walls of your house, or are you interested in learning and educating yourself? I congratulate all those who are sincere in their studies, but I also know that there are many who come to college to have a good-time and gossip about their favorite topics like fashion, romance etc. Life is more than fashion and romance. Don’t just be beautiful, but also be intellectually evolved.
And do not under-estimate the importance of education in life, especially for girls. I travel around the world and get to meet several women. I have heard stories of women who are facing adversities in their life just because they are not educated, and hence they end up being dependent on men who then take undue advantage of them.

Girls should learn martial arts to develop the physical ability to protect themselves
In India it is a normal practice to marry off a girl at the very young age of 20-25yrs. And it is also seen that girls just drop their education mid-way, as soon as they get married; marriage is seen as the only purpose of educating girls! But what is the guarantee that your husband will always be there with you? What if he dies before you? Have you ever thought what will happen to you then? And do you have any idea of the life of a widow? The treatment meted out to widows in India is very biased. They are considered a curse and are not even allowed to socialize; a widow ends up being a victim of society.
It is society which has laid down the ‘dos and don’ts’ for girls during menstruation. Even today in twenty-first century India, many conservative gurus and pundits propagate such idiosyncrasies as a woman being impure during her periods. The height of superstition in India is that women are told not to touch pickles during their periods as the pickle will spoil!
A woman is not allowed to enter temples, to worship god, to touch or eat pickle – the list is endless. To break through this myth, I asked two lady scientists to conduct a research on menstruating women. They not only made six hundred menstruating women from different parts of the country touch pickles for three months, but also made them prepare pickles. The pickles were sealed and kept under observation. Not a single jar of pickle went bad!
Menstruation is a sign of a girl’s fertility; if the girl doesn’t menstruate, then she will never become a mother. This is the system Nature has given to a woman. How can a system given by Nature be impure? Due to her periods, she is able to become a mother and can give birth to a child and bring a new life into the world.
I don’t want you to become victims; I want you all to evolve and secure yourselves physically, mentally and financially. You should learn martial arts to develop the physical ability to protect yourself. Why do you need to depend on any male to save you from any difficult circumstance? Empower yourself and equip yourself such that you become your own protector. You should learn meditation to explore your inherent potential and to be in a state of peace and calm. Empower…Educate…Evolve!
When a boy is educated, an individual is educated; when a girl is educated, the whole generation is educated as she will further educate the children and girls in her family. Yet girls are given discriminatory treatment by their own parents!
Meditation is one of the most important tools in learning. Students often complain about forgetting their studies and not being able to retain for long what they have learnt. The major reason for this is that your mind isn’t integrated. It has too many thoughts regarding several issues in your life. When you study, you not only study but think about so many other things at the same time. To sharpen your memory, you should learn the techniques of Tratak and Yog Nidra. Tratak is an ancient technique which helps to improve concentration and integrates the mind. Yog Nidra is also an ancient technique devised and used by our sages, to activate the dormant areas of the human body and mind. Albert Einstein, the famous scientist is supposed to have used just 8% of his brain’s capacity! This indicates the extent of the capabilities of the human brain. Both the techniques are power-tools to unleash your potential to its optimum.
Swami Vivekananda is often cited for his remarkable intelligence and memory. In one instance, when the loan of a book from a scientist’s library was refused to him, he asked for permission to read it there and then. This instance is amazing in that he not only read the complete book in just three hours, but also understood and shared his understanding with the scientist! The secret of his prodigious memory is Yog Nidra.
In Yog Nidra one is required to move consciousness to different parts of the body, followed by a reverse counting of breaths and then to resolve – resolve is very important as whatever you resolve at that time in Yog Nidra will definitely become a reality. So always make a creative and constructive resolve to make your life beautiful. Regular practice of this technique can awaken the power of intuition and many other dormant capabilities.
A woman is a creator; she is blessed with the ability to give birth. No man can ever match this ability because he doesn’t have a womb to give birth. In an attempt to become creators, men strive to paint, climb mountains and engage in other such activities.
It is sad that the creator of life is killed and not given a chance to be born. I am talking about female foeticide and infanticide. The sharp decline in the number of girls per thousand boys indicates that many people resort to such cruel practices. You should be thankful to your parents for they didn’t kill you in the womb, and for giving you an opportunity to acquire knowledge. If you come across any woman who is going in for a sex determination test with the intention of resorting to foeticide, just make her aware of the cruelty of her act, and save the life of the child to be.

Why do we have desires, emotions and attachments?

Q. What are the desires of the mind?

Gurumaa: People desire good clothes, good things, cars, etc., and sometimes they even question why the guru owns these things? “I too should get a chance to enjoy them!”
The reality is that we are not even aware that there are repressed desires deep within us. We don’t even know which desires we are harboring and when they will come up to the surface, overpower us, and even make us cast aspersions on the guru: ‘How come he is wearing good clothes, possessing good things, traveling in a Mercedes…etc.’
Only wisdom can show us the way out of the trap of desires that our mind creates; as such, not even experience can. If only the experience of sensual gratification could lead us out of it, the whole world would be wise. But it is only the wisdom to distinguish the perishable from the imperishable, and the discernment to understand that there is a pit into which we can fall if we don’t watch out, that can help us come out of the web spun by the ego.
It is not a bad thing to desire good clothes or good stuff, but to make it the means and not the end is harmful. The Birlas, Tatas, Ambanis, Donald Trump, Bill Gates: all have tons of money – they don’t just jet around the world, they own private jets. Yet, after having all this, do they possess the wisdom to realize that all these things are transient; are not meant to be pursued and multiplied, and in the end will not give them the true happiness they actually seek in this round-about way?
We do not have to judge only other people; we can be unbiased but critical of ourselves too. We need to just watch our mind and learn from our mistakes. If we are watchful, we can learn new things every moment – that is the only way to come out of the trap set by the mind. Every enlightened being has once stumbled, fallen and made mistakes, but also learnt that when and where you fall, know it to be just a fall – and get up again.
So I say that mind can be changed. The body has its limitations; we are built in a certain way and after a point we cannot really change that structure, but the mind can break the boundaries it has created and it can expand. Acceptance of limitations and boundaries is necessary to overcome them.
Observe the sky, the trees, the flowers, the grass… the colors, the fragrances all around, and rejoice that you can do so. Have you ever woken up in the morning with sheer joy: ‘Wow, I am actually alive! I can see, smell, hear, taste, touch….?’
What we see is not real; the world is not real…Everything seen is imperishable. ‘Conditions apply!’ Therefore be very vigilant and mindful all the time. Watch your mind.

Q. Why do we have desires, emotions and attachments? How can we detach our selves from them as they create so much of suffering?

Gurumaa: Desires and emotions are a part of being human. We have been blessed to feel emotions; the problem arises when we don’t know how to manage these emotions and when unnecessarily because of the ignorance we stumble upon our emotions and fall down.
You can’t blame nature for giving us emotions and should rather be thankful to it. From mother we experience unconditional affection; from father we get immense inspiration and support – both financial and emotional support; brothers & sisters and all other relatives play a very important role in shaping up your personality.
Whatsoever differences or problems may arise in our relationships but that doesn’t mean that emotions and attachments are bad. No, they are good. Even attachment is good.
It is only through attachment that one learns to cling and only the one who has learned to cling and enjoyed worldly affections can come out of it. Attachments are not meant to get stuck but to experience, enjoy and simply move beyond them.
Have you ever seen a dry leaf falling down from the tree? No one pulls the leaf; no one asks it to come down. Leaf is not making any conscious effort to fall down. But by just being with that branch one day it starts getting dried up. Leaf is attached to the branch but slowly the juice flowing in the leaf starts drying up, and gradually the color of leaf changes, and one day it simply falls down.
The family attachments and emotions are just like tree and leaf; we are like a leaf and family & society are like a tree. Till the time the juice of affections and emotions is flowing we are happy. But yes, whenever you are happy you should not forget the fact that you can’t continue to be happy always. Happiness comes after sadness.
The fun of meeting a friend is only when you meet him after a long separation. When two friends or two relatives sit together and live together for a long time, all fun and ecstasy just vanishes. So we need some separation to enjoy the meetings and we need some sadness too to enjoy the happiness. We need death to celebrate life.
Beauty of life is in its contradictions. Wise persons know how to live whereas unwise persons don’t know how to live and how to die. That is the reason of their pain and turmoil. See, with pencil you can write beautiful poetries, short stories, novels; you can write anything but with that pencil you can hurt yourself too. Have you ever seen a child who pokes the pencil in his nose, puts it in his ear, put it in his eyes and then cries? Child can also say that throw away all the pencils and pens from home. They are so dangerous why have you kept them at home.
But we always teach the child that it was his mistake to poke the pencil and there is no reason to throw away all the pens and pencils from home. Similarly there is no need to throw away all the emotions and attachments. Experience them but with open eyes. Know that every emotion and attachment has its own limitations.
Every life is followed by death, happiness is followed by sorrow and every meeting is followed by separation. So we should accept life in all its dualities. Problem is this that we want to remain on the bank only i.e. we don’t want separation, we don’t want death, we don’t want sadness and we don’t want misfortunes.
Whether you want something or not, problems are going to be there. Be easy and accept the life in its totality. When sadness comes be sad, when happiness comes enjoy, when death happens be very thoughtful, when birth happens rejoice. Rabindra Nath Tagore, on birth of any child used to say that God is still not angry with the humans and that’s the reason a new being has entered in our life.

Excess or lack of protein and carbohydrates is not good for the body, so watch out for the amount of these nutrients you take daily

eat everything in moderation
and nothing in excess

Protein is a vital nutrient, essential to your health. In its purest form, protein consists of chains of amino acids. There are 22 amino acids that combine to form different proteins, and 8 of these must come from the foods we eat. Our body uses these amino acids to create muscles, blood, skin, hair, nails and internal organs. Proteins help replace and form new tissue, transports oxygen and nutrients in our blood and cells, regulates the balance of water and acids, and is needed to make antibodies. However, too much of a good thing may not be so good for you. Many people are putting their health at risk by eating too much protein. Excessive protein consumption, particularly animal protein, can result in heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, and kidney stones. As important as protein is for our body, there are many misconceptions about how much we really need in our diet, and the best way to obtain it.

Proteins help replace and form new tissue, transports oxygen and nutrients in our blood and cells, regulates the balance of water and acids, and is needed to make antibodies
Some people, in the pursuit of thinness, are going on high-protein diets and are eating up to four times the amount of protein that their body needs. So exactly how much protein does your body really need? Much less than you think! According to the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health, as little as 50-60 grams of protein is enough for most adults. This breaks down to about 10-12% of total calories. Your body only needs 0.36 grams of protein per pound of body weight. To calculate the exact amount you need, multiply your ideal weight by 0.36. This will give you your optimum daily protein requirement in grams. Since the amount of protein needed depends on the amount of lean body mass and not fat, ideal weight is used instead of actual weight. Infants, children, pregnant and nursing women require more protein.
People on high-protein diets are consuming up to 34% of their total calories in the form of protein and up to 53% of total calories from fat. Most of these people are unaware of the amount of protein and fat that is contained in the foods they eat. You achieve quick weight loss on these diets because of this high fat content. High fat foods give you the sensation of feeling full, faster, so you end up eating fewer total calories. However, this type of protein and fat combination is not the healthiest. Animal proteins are loaded with cholesterol and saturated fat. Many people on these diets also experience an elevation in their LDL (the bad) cholesterol when they remain on this diet for long periods. High levels of LDL cholesterol in the blood clog arteries and is the chief culprit in heart disease, particularly heart attack and stroke. So while you may lose weight in the short-run, you are putting your cardiovascular health in jeopardy in the long-run.
Another reason weight loss is achieved on these high-protein diets, at least temporarily, is actually due to water loss. The increase in the amount of protein consumed, especially from dairy products, raises the levels of uric acid and urea in the blood. These are toxic by-products of protein breakdown and metabolism. The body eliminates this uric acid and urea by pumping lots of water into the kidneys and urinary tract to help it flush out. However, a detrimental side effect of this diuretic response is the loss of essential minerals from the body, including calcium. The high intake of protein leaches calcium from the bones, which leads to osteoporosis.
Medical evidence shows that the body loses an average of 1.75 milligrams of calcium in the urine for every 1 gram increase in animal protein ingested.
Additionally, as calcium and other minerals are leached from our bones, they are deposited in the kidneys and can form into painful kidney stones. If a kidney stone becomes large enough to cause a blockage, it stops the flow of urine from the kidney and must be removed by surgery or other methods.
Plant-based proteins, like that found in soy, lowers LDL cholesterol and raises HDL (the good) cholesterol. This prevents the build up of arterial plaque which leads to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and heart disease, thus reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke. The amount and type of protein in your diet also has an important impact on calcium absorption and excretion. Vegetable-protein diets enhance calcium retention in the body and results in less excretion of calcium in the urine. This reduces the risk of osteoporosis and kidney problems. Interestingly, kidney disease is far less common in people who eat a vegetable-based diet than it is in people who eat an animal-based diet. By replacing animal protein with vegetable protein and replacing saturated fat with unsaturated fat, like that found in olive and canola oils, you can avoid the pitfalls of the typical high-protein diet. You will be able to improve your health and regulate your weight while enjoying a vast array of delicious, nutritionally dense, high fibre foods.
Remember, eat everything in moderation and nothing in excess. Also, the only healthy way to achieve permanent weight loss is to burn more calories than you take in. Anything else is just a gimmick.
If you’ve been wanting to lose weight without compromising your own health, then the Low-Carbohydrate and High-Protein Diet could be an option to consider. But before you dig deeper on how this diet approach helps in losing weight, it would be better to first cover the basics on what these nutrients can do for your body.

Carbs and Protein
Carbohydrates no longer sound like a stranger to anyone who’s been trying to lose weight instantly. This is one essential nutrient that’s commonly misconceived as unhealthy. Many say that carbs in a diet predominately result in an increase in fats. But, don’t take this as a gospel truth for not all carbohydrates are bad. They’re not the only reason why your body may feel bloated and large, and knowing what different types of carbs do for your body is crucial to your health and weight loss.
Protein, on the other hand, is good for the heart. The absence of its supply can lead to various illnesses and may even result in death. Some of these illnesses are weakening of the respiratory and immune systems, malfunctioning of the heart, as well as growth failure. Protein is acquired mostly from poultry products such as milk, beans, meat, whole grains, oats and peanuts.
So, why is the Low-Carbohydrate and High Protein Diet being implemented? What are the benefits?
If your main objective is to reduce your body weight, then it’s better to try the Low-Carbohydrate and High-Protein Diet than the Low-Fat and High-Carbohydrate approach. Low carbohydrates mean that your blood sugar level doesn’t increase quickly. Since there’s a minimal supply of sugar compared to the average amount you get, you have a lower risk of developing diabetes. You may ask about the energy supply you need and say “I thought carbohydrates are important because we need energy?” But don’t worry, because protein can cover this.
Any food that’s high in protein tends to make the digestion slower. In which case, you don’t easily get hungry and feel empty. Once you start feeling empty, your energy tends to decrease as well. However, the low-carbohydrate diet doesn’t mean that your body won’t get the energy it needs. Of course, carbohydrates are just one energy source; other nutrients can help supply energy as well.
The Low-Carb and High-Protein Diet doesn’t only contribute to quicker weight loss and lower blood sugar level, it also helps reduce blood-triglyceride levels, which is good for the heart.
Although this type of diet is advised, it doesn’t mean that the food you’re going to eat are only those that are high in proteins and miss out on other essential minerals and vitamins found in other varieties. Excess or lack of protein and carbohydrates is not good for the body, so watch out for the amount of these nutrients you take daily. Knowing the essential nutrients your body needs and the process on how to properly get these nourishments can prevent you from getting sick.

Kabir’s love for his master is beyond any words. Yet he could be ruthless when he speaks truth – it is going to be as sharp as razor’s edge.
Kabir said, ‘Guru is a must’ but which Guru;
what are the attributes of Guru?

Who is a Guru, what is Guru’s strength, what is Guru’s power? Is it because he is sitting on a bigger chair – Can anyone who sits on that chair becomes a Guru? If that is so then I will get up and leave this seat and sit somewhere else. I can leave this couch and sit comfortably anywhere in the hall. Any one from the audience can sit here – will this seat make you a Guru? It is not even the color of robe or style of clothes, which makes Guru – a Guru. Is the one who wears ochre colored robe a Guru? If so, tomorrow I will wear pink, day after that I will wear purple or something flashy to dazzle you. Guru’s attributes are not in the clothes. Guru’s wisdom is the secret of being a Guru. Now I am wearing a long tilak on my forehead, tomorrow I will not wear it, would it change my status of being a Guru? Who is Guru – one who speaks Sanskrit language, which you will not understand? Guru is not even the one who can lecture you or narrate you stories.
Guru is Guru because of the wisdom, experience, and state of consciousness. So if you have to follow Guru then follow Guru’s sadhana. Do it as Guru did sadhana with dedication, sincerity, and intensity. Be dependent on your experience and not on the words spoken by the master. Master’s words can be a map, but you have to travel with the aid of map. Don’t sit with the map – walk with the map.
Guru is your friend, guide and motivator; don’t turn Guru into a crutch. Guru is the powerhouse. Who is a Guru? The one who has the wisdom, vision, experience and the power of discrimination. Guru is the one who has awakened, who has evolved. Once upon a time even Guru was as foolish as you are now and did same mistakes. Anyone who is wise today was a fool once upon a time, and then the fool grew up and became wise.
Who is a Guru? The one who has learned from his or her mistakes – who has the life experience and learned from it and matured.

Who is a fool? The one who will never learn – neither from his mistakes nor by listening to the discourses or by reading great books. A fool will always be a fool. If you import a donkey to U.S.A, he will still remain a donkey. India very recently has sent a satellite named ‘Chandrayaan’ in space; say if you send a donkey in the rocket, will he become a man? It will still remain a donkey. This is the bitter truth: a fool will remain a fool – well most of the time.
The Guru is not ashamed of his past foolishness. Guru knows that the entire journey has made him mature. When Guru sees his disciples, he sees his own reflection in them. Guru can also see the future of present fools, and knows that one day the fools will become a gyani – wise. In Sanyas tradition, Anand is added to the name of a sanyaasi, like Akhanadanand, Satyanand, Anubhutanand, so even a ‘moorh’ (fool) in Hindi language is called Murkhaanand. Respect is must and it should be given to all, whatever the status might be. To call fool, a fool is disgrace. One day in the life of a fool, a Satguru comes and slowly transformation happens. Negativities like greed, selfishness, anger and lust persist in him but with Guru’s guidance and with the fire of sadhana slowly one after another all negativities are removed.
So there is a hope for every fool; one day he too can become wise. But first a fool has to know that he is a fool – this is the first step in the direction of becoming wise. Once this first step is taken then the journey of fool begins. So your real search can begin only when you know that your present condition is not good – you realize that you have to do something about it. Most of the people are living as if they have no senses or intellect. They are happy in their self-inflicted miseries; they don’t know that life can be lived in a much better way. I do not want your life to be filled with sorrow, pain, and misery.

Who is a Guru?
The one who has the wisdom, vision, experience and

the power of discrimination
It is part of Guru’s responsibility to help the disciple to become emotionally and spiritually strong but Guru alone cannot do this. Kabir has sung glory of master in lofty words. But at times people misunderstand it. Now and then, there are going to be ups & down – turmoil in life. Unintentionally, people depend on the Guru as a person and not on the teachings.
Kabir’s verses explain how to behave with a Guru. Kabir gave a beautiful name to Guru, it is ‘Sahib’ – meaning my Lord. Guru is seen as a form of God. Many Sufi masters have said that we have not seen God with our eyes but after seeing Guru we know God does exist, otherwise how can a mortal being be such luminous, pious and compassionate.
What does Guru give? Maybe in the beginning it will be just a mantra. Mantra is not just plain set of words. They are sound waves, which have very specific effect on human brain. Every sound has an effect on body and our ancient masters used mantras to create much needed changes in seeker’s brain. Brain is the place where the most important glands are working, namely – pituitary and pineal gland, which are further related with hypothalamus. Mantra is a sound wave which has a great effect on these organs. For spiritual practice one needs concentration, equanimity, focus, de-fogged mind and with mantra recitation practitioner creates such waves which are slowly going to bring these desired elements in mind.
Initially, the Guru gives the mantra and one should practice the mantra sincerely. Mantra works like a bridge in between Guru and disciple. It connects both – the Guru and the disciple. When Guru gives the mantra to disciple, it is not only mantra which is given but also powerful energy gets transported. Chanting mantra regularly can give lot of strength to your body, and it unclutters the mind so that intellect can be made pristine and clear.
Shishya, the disciple, benefits from love and compassion of Guru. We need Guru hence we seek Guru, not vice versa. Our scriptures have been written by those individuals who themselves had gained everything from their respective Gurus, thus it goes without saying that to excel in this life one definitely needs guidance from the master.
Seek master with understanding, love and surrender. But do not ever think that once you have found Guru it is solely the duty of Guru to give you Samadhi – the total absorption state; disciple has to work hard with the Guru to match his steps – step by step.
Seek Guru’s guidance but don’t be dependent on the Guru, as it can be a dangerous affair – as any such bondage is a hurdle in this path. By being dependent, you turn your Guru into another angle of emotional dependency. If you follow the guidance of the Guru meticulously then Guru’s blessings will shower on you – that too without asking. And if you become dependent on your Guru then you have turned your Guru into a crutch. The seed of emotional dependency is rooted deep in the human nature – first it is on mother, father, and then it is wife and children. You depend on your money, prestige, and this tendency keeps on growing. When everything else has failed you, then it is your Guru on whom you begin to depend on. Guru can be a guide but Guru cannot walk the path for you. Solely depending on the Guru and not practicing what Guru has taught, won’t work at all. Just listening to the discourses and not implementing the words won’t serve you. In the end it is you who can redeem you – not the Guru.

Kabir has called this world 'Nahirwa'. This word from Hindi language means girl's home.

Kabir has called this world ‘Nahirwa’. This word from Hindi language means girl’s home. In Hindu marriages a girl leaves her father’s house to live with her husband. As every girl’s dream would be to get married and be with her husband, Kabir says, ‘I don’t like being here in this world, I wish to go to my husband’s home.’ Who is the husband? God is the husband. It’s a very poetic expression. In India God is not only just your father; God can be your husband too and what a wonderful husband. Sufis and saints have loved God like a woman would love her husband. In India there have been two types of bhakti movements – in one bhakta is masculine and in other feminine. In one tradition devotee is woman and God is man, and in other bhakta is man and God is considered a woman. There is a deeper angle to this form of devotion which we need to understand fully.
God is invisible, and it is beyond mind and senses; a devout wonders how I can find thee. The pursuit to find God is very masculine. We have to work, we have to woo, and we have to provoke God to come out of her veil. The other movement was where devout sees himself as female and God as a man. Hence, as a woman waits for her beloved to come and take her away, similarly devotee waits for God to sweep him into the divine world of lord. Kabir in these verses is singing in feminine notes – “Nahirwa humka na bhaway” i.e. I don’t like being in this world and I want to be with my Lord. The urgency, longing and the pain of love are spun in these words.
This world which seems so enchanting and entertaining to you is not a source of joy or happiness for the lover of God. For the lover of God going within oneself is the perfect way to have a rendezvous with the existent. It seems so amazing that the world in which you are entangled, and you find it so difficult to come out of, seems to the eyes of devotee just a heap of dust. For the lover of God it is nothing more than dust.

The world that seems so solid and physical to you – in reality it is not! The reality which seems so distant to you is something most close to you.
Some people wonder how can someone leave everything and just follow God and just do meditation, chanting, yoga, and mantra all the time. “How can one be so insensitive that one leaves the world which is so beautiful – such wonderful sights, great delicious food to eat, wonderful sex. How can one leave all this and run after God, which you don’t even see.” However, the truth is that what seems to be sparkling like diamonds to you is nothing more than a dewdrop, which is merely sparkling in sunrays. It seems to be shining like a diamond and you wish to, hold it and, become rich with it – but can you become rich by holding a dewdrop in your hand? The moment you touch the dewdrop it is gone…it dies, dissolves.
The world that seems so solid and physical to you – in reality it is not! The reality which seems so distant to you is something most close to you. But you can’t see this because the veil of darkness & ignorance has clouded your mind. Even now you are unable to relate to all this.
This poem of Kabir, a great mystic poet, is oozing with love, with real love and he says so because he experienced the godliness but you don’t feel such love for God. As you have no idea who God is; for you God is just an idea propagated by priests and believed by masses. God is nothing more than a belief for most of the people, although it is a different story that people can die or kill in the name of God.

Sri Krishna in Bhagavad Geeta says: ‘Action is life and no one can remain without action.'

Q: How do we separate stress from our work?
Gurumaa: The problem is not work or work related stress, rather it is your habit of remaining in stress, cultivating stress. And you have nurtured this habit to an extent that even if you are in paradise, you will convert it into a hell; you will remain in stress and more stress even in paradise. So, you have to change your way of thinking. The important question is: what is your approach to the work you are doing? In reality, work has nothing to do with your stress. You can work twenty-four hours and never ever feel any stress.
Work has nothing to do with your stress. You can work twenty-four hours and never ever feel any stress
Let me give you a real life example. I was in Ahmedabad for satsang, for five days. After five days of satsang, I flew to Hyderabad for one evening to meet devotees there, and the same night I took flight for Pune to conduct another five days of satsang. So through the day I kept traveling – coming in and out of airports; During the day I went to my center in Hyderabad, met people, had tea with them, did sankeertan with them, and went back to the airport to board the flight for next city. I reached the destination at one o’ clock; even dogs were sleeping and here I was traveling. Was it stressful? No! I saw a beautiful sunset in Hyderabad. The satsang and kirtan which happened in Hyderabad were awesome. I enjoyed the cup of coffee at this new posh airport. In the craft, I enjoyed my dinner and read a good book. The house where I had to go was on the top of the mountain; the early sunbeam trickled into my room through the window and gave me a beautiful morning. Say if you had to go through this schedule, what would you have done? You would have yelled at everyone in Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Pune.
How can work give you stress? The problem is in the way you approach life – this approach is wrong. When you say, ‘I don’t want to do anything’, do you mean that you wish to sit in the sofa, watch T.V and eat popcorn – lay lazy like the couch potato. Do you think this would be an unstressful thing?
No one can stay without action. Sri Krishna in Bhagavat Geeta says: ‘Action is life and no one can remain without action.’ You have to do the action – your body, senses, mind, everything is in action – no one can remain without action. So learn how to do your work. Learn to be calm through right thinking and then right action will happen through you. Do the Karma like a character performs his role in a drama – your life is nothing more than a drama, a real time drama. Enjoy the show, don’t complain. Every day you have a new beginning, new screen play, so do your new act. The best part of that is that the screenplay for it is written daily by none other than you.
What happens in a drama? There is a villain, a good man, a bad man, a villain and a vamp. You can be the hero or heroine, no problem. Scandals are happening, fights are happening, family gets separated and then family union is happening – so much drama. If I begin to narrate even your life story, it would be so interesting to everyone. But how pathetic, you are the only one who is not enjoying the drama, others might laugh. If someone sits with you and listens to your story you feel very good. You really like that as you like attention and narrating your sob stories to others is therapeutic to your mind.
Sri Krishna in Bhagavad Geeta says:

‘Action is life and no one can remain without action.’

You have to do the action; your body, senses, mind, everything is in action – no one can remain without action
Life is not a problem – the only thing is that you have taken your life seriously. You have forgotten that it is just a dream. You have forgotten the fact that before this body you were formless. The day this body dies again you will become formless until your next reincarnation. In between birth and death the drama of the forms is happening. All of you have names, addresses, characters and attributes, and this interaction which is happening in the midst of different forms, bodies, identities is the real time drama happening. Why can’t you enjoy that?

The problem is that you don’t flow with your life. Life is always going to give you a new situation and a new challenge, but you should never be comfortable in any situation – good or bad – as everything is going to change.
When you sleep at night and dreams begin, you forget the so-called real world. When the dream is over, the cycle of deep sleep comes and then you leave behind the dream world too. Deep sleep brings the transition from real to dream world and this happens so smoothly that you are not even aware of its happening. Death too brings the change from this life to next, from this body to next body, and when death comes this life which seems real will be forgotten like a dream. As long as it is there, enjoy life!
But you cannot enjoy life if you don’t know what eternal is i.e. what is that which is non-changing. You can’t enjoy life if you are not aware of real joy which is not dependent on any outer source. Simply stating, if you do not know the art of being joyful how can you be joyous. For this, deeper understanding of life and its ways is to be learnt; one needs to be trained to be in joyousness. Now you are all trained to be pessimistic that is why you are picking on the negative points of people and nagging with people. But you are not able to pick up the good things in life. You are always looking at the half glass empty, not the half which is full. You never look at what you have but what you don’t have. Then you say, ‘why am I in misery? Why me?’

If you do not know the art of being joyful, how can you be joyous.
Know this one fundamental rule: ‘Change is the law’. Things are going to change; you should not be dependent on individuals or situations because they all can change anytime
Know this one fundamental rule: “Change is the law’. Things are going to change; you should not be dependent on individuals or situations because they all can change anytime. A friend can become a foe and a foe can become a friend anytime. When it happens you will be flabbergasted. You wonder how that happened. The only person or the only being you can depend upon is God alone. Learn to trust God; those who trust, they never feel sad, dejected or frustrated.

Surdas, a great blind saint said in one of his compositions that there is no better friend than Hari (God). He gave many examples sourced from mythology to prove his point. In Vishnu Purana there is a story of an elephant that was caught by a crocodile. Hari came running to crocodile’s rescue. He gave another example from Mahabharata where Krishna helped five brothers, the Pandavas, from every obstacle and they attained paradise with Lord’s grace. So, nobody can be better than Hari. Surdas says, “God will remove all your sufferings, sadness and difficulties, but the question is: Are you ready to be with God?” Now your love and attention for God is conditional. You think: God saved them, why shouldn’t He save me also? But it is not possible until your love for God is unconditional.

God will remove all your sufferings, sadness and difficulties, but the question is: Are you ready to be with God?
Who is a devotee? The one who can surrender to Lord without any question, whatever may happen. You have come to this world naked and you will go naked. In between these two situations, you see some people are with more money and stuff than others, some got name, fame, etc. but what is the difference? When you came out of your mother’s womb, you were not even wearing a nappy! You came out all naked. The day you die, as per Hindu custom, the body is covered with kafan (shroud) and taken to the cremation ground. Your daughter-in-laws, sons, daughters and all siblings together will make sure to remove all the jewelry, designer watches, solitaires which you savoured and wore with pride. If you had not made a will then they will get the thumb impression on the faked will. Today you have no time for doing sadhana or to seek God, your whole time is consumed in worldly pursuits. Wake up before it is too late. Pay attention to your upliftment now.

God cannot become your experience unless and until you make it as your priority and put all your energy, capabilities, will and volitions in exploring this
One old man went to a doctor as he couldn’t see clearly. Doctor examined him and said “you have cataract and surgery is required and it should be done as early as possible”. The old man thought why should I go for operation – I have 8 sons so I have 16 eyes, I have 8 daughters so another 16 eyes, my wife has 2 eyes, so in total I have 34 eyes. I am living in a house with thirty-four eyes, so why should I get operated. These eyes are more than enough for me and moreover how long will I live? Why waste money. One day a fire accident happened in his house and the whole house got engulfed in raging fire. Soon all the thirty-four eyes rushed out to save their lives, and old man was stuck as he had totally lost his vision. Once family was outside the house they realized that the old man is still in the house. It was too late for them to go inside. Since the old man couldn’t escape on his own, he got burned and died.
Who do you think is going to help you? You have no time for God. You are ‘ok’ with the concept of God. You have not explored God. You have not discovered God. You have not experienced God. For you God is just a concept. This concept has no root; it is not grounded and any communist can slash it away. Any misfortune, any hard situation shakes you up, and you begin to wonder – does God exist? It is just a concept, nothing more than that. You haven’t made it an experience. You just believe in God, and beliefs don’t work.
Once people used to believe that earth is sitting on the horn of a bull, and when the bull gets tired he shifts the earth from one horn to another which causes earthquakes. This is what people used to believe. Is it true? Once upon a time people believed that the earth is square and flat but now we don’t believe that. Now we know that the earth is round. Once it was believed that sun does the circumambulation of the earth and poor Galileo was executed in the king’s court for just saying this – It is the earth which is revolving around the sun and not the sun which revolves around the earth. But do we believe all this now? All beliefs keep on changing.
God should not be your belief. God should be your experience. God cannot become your experience unless and until you make it as your priority and put all your energy, capabilities, will and volitions in exploring this. If you are happy in the very convenient belief system, I have nothing against that. So be happy, as such the idiom says ‘fools live in paradise’. Fools are happy in their belief system. But wise ones will always explore what Truth is, what reality is. Surdas did that and found the fact that no one can be my true friend and I fully surrender and leave myself in His hands and whatever may happen in my life I am fine.

What is our first reaction when we hurt or bruise ourselves? Our hands automatically go to

What is our first reaction when we hurt or bruise ourselves? Our hands automatically go to soothe that particular part of our body. Even if a child or a loved one is injured or ill, we instinctively reach out and gently caress them to ease the pain.
The sense of touch in human beings is a particularly refined one. Our hands and fingers, especially our fingertips, are extremely sensitive to both pleasure and pain, as they have very fine nerve endings.
Our hands are extensions of the heart and express our deepest thoughts and emotions.

In fact, a skillful touch is an extremely powerful therapeutic tool which connects us at deep emotional levels.
A study carried out in America illustrates this very clearly. Two groups of premature babies were studied; the first was the control group in which the infants were left alone most of the time, except for feeding. The infants in the second group were held and cuddled each time they were fed. After the study was complete, it was observed that 80% of the infants in the second group had put on more weight than those in the control group. These babies were healthier and were able to leave the hospital much earlier than the control group, saving the government thousands of dollars in childcare.
This and other similar studies show how vital the sense of touch is to human beings; in fact it can be a lifesaver. Throughout history, nearly every culture developed its own traditional hands-on healing methods, which profoundly affected human beings on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. In fact, touch can vary from direct contact with the area to merely stroking the aura without any actual physical contact with the body.
Massage is a wonderful technique which employs skillful touch to relax both body and mind. It is a unique way of communicating without words; a healing art, which relieves pain and suffering.
In today’s jet age, massage is most definitely a stress buster as energy levels are low but stress levels are very high – whether it is deadlines at work, commuting in crowded cities or emotional confrontations in relationships. Children particularly, are brought up more with dictatorship than with love and understanding; the stricter the upbringing, the more dysfunctional and stressed-out adults they become.
It is now proven beyond doubt that our thoughts and emotions have a direct imprint on our body. In fact, we are what we think!
Often we notice that when we are happy and positive, our body feels light, flexible and energetic. When we feel depressed, stress, tension and negative emotions take over and we feel weighed down – as if a heavy burden is upon us. It is as if we are literally carrying the ‘weight of the world’ on our shoulders.
If this tension is not dissipated, it gets stored in the body. Negative thinking and suppression of desires leads to more blocks, preventing the free flow of energy. This blocked-up energy causes rigidity in muscles and tissues. Excess tissue builds up in the affected area forming a ‘protective’ psychological barrier. Wilhelm Reich, the father of modern psychology coined an apt term for it. He called it ‘Body Armour’, a term massage therapists are all too familiar with.
Rigidity in the body brings rigidity to the mind, and each perpetuates the other, setting up a vicious cycle.
This brings along chronic fatigue, high blood pressure, chronic shallow breathing, a negative self-image and low self-esteem – the classic pathologies of neuro-muscular stress.
Stress can be stored anywhere in the body. However, it is found that specific areas like the neck, shoulders and back muscles usually accumulate more stress. These muscles tend to remain stiff and tense all the time until eventually the pain becomes chronic. It gets aggravated with bad posture, hunching over the computer for hours together, wearing ill-fitting uncomfortable shoes and lifting heavy things incorrectly.

“Massage is a wonderful technique which employs

skillful touch to relax both body and mind.

It is a unique way of communicating without words;

Our muscles have an inbuilt memory; they learn to contracton stimulation and relax whenthe stimulus is removed. However, when we remain stressed for a long time, muscles forget their original relaxed state and remain contracted all the time – a condition called sensory-motor amnesia. This leads to chronic stress and can be very painful.
A good massage therapist locates and gently eases out the tension areas. Different massage strokes like kneading, friction and application of pressure enhance blood circulation and flush out wastes and toxins from the body. The heat generated by friction and rubbing helps to loosen the tight muscles. In expert hands, knots slowly unravel and the muscle gradually comes back to its original elasticity. This takes time, but guided breathing by the therapist and a willingness to consciously let go of holding patterns on the part of the client, are key factors. Once muscles relax, breathing slows down and the positive and negative charges in the body start to balance out.
A massage treatment should ideally feel like one continuous flow, and a good massage can even lead to altered states of consciousness.
Circulatory massage can be relaxing or energizing. The strokes are nearly always in the direction of the heart. Long, smooth strokes called effleurage, and kneading, squeezing strokes called pettrisage, are the two most important strokes in circulatory massage, so called because blood and lymph circulation as well as the heart function are greatly facilitated.
A relaxing massage generally starts with the face and head to calm the thoughts, and then moves downwards.
Esalen Massage, developed at Esalen Institute, California, at the very beginning of the New Age movement, is a very soothing massage with long, rhythmic strokes, which can put people to sleep! It is great for business oriented people and those who are tense and hyperactive, as it is a wonderful way of transfering healing energy.
Swedish Massage on the other hand, is brisk and invigorating and generally starts with the legs and feet. Rapid strokes with deep friction and percussion movements break down congested lymph areas, cellulite, and muscle spasms, leaving the person totally rejuvenated. It is excellent for athletes, obese people and those who are depressed or withdrawn, as it increases vibrancy levels dramatically!
These days Deep Tisssue Massage is very popular. This employs firm, constant compression, which liberates psychic tension in the muscles. It elongates and restores the elasticity of muscles as well. This kind of slow, deep work is most effective when both the client and therapist breathe in unison.
Thai Massage is also called Yoga Massage and includes some amazing stretches, postures and unique pressure-point work, all of which have a direct effect on the energy meridians in the body. This enhances chi, the vital life-force energy in the body. The therapist uses his or her own body weight in a fluid, rhythmic manner and gently guides the client into a deeply relaxed harmonious state, where yin and yang – the polar opposites – come together in perfect balance.
Ayurveda – the ’science of life’ – too recommends massage as a daily practice to stay fit and healthy and to remove toxins from the body. The sequence moves from the legs upwards to the back, torso, the arms and then finally to the head. The strokes are proximal to distal and flow outward to nourish the extremities as well.
Ayurveda especially recommends the correct use of different oils according to the season, pulse diagnosis, age and temperament of the client.
Ayurvedic Massage is said to balance the tridosha – the three humours: vata (wind), pitta (bile) and kapha (phlegm). It is known to rejuvenate the system, nourish the seven dhatus (constituents of the body), remove fatigue, improve eyesight, increase longevity, enhance immunity and strengthen the skin improving its color and texture.
Head massage is given a lot of importance in Ayurveda as it increases the supply of fresh oxygen and glucose to the brain, relaxes the nervous system, improves the circulation of life-giving cerebro-spinal fluid, increases the secretion of hormones and enzymes necessary for growth and development of brain cells, cures dryness, and increases the level of pranic energy in the brain. Nowadays, ‘Indian Head Massage’ is in great demand in spas and beauty parlours the world over.

* Enhanced confidence andenergy
* Reduced need for sleep, yetsleeping more peacefully

Massage is nearly always done with oils. These days, Aromatherapy Massage with essential oils is very popular. Essential oils like lavender and tea-tree are the only ones that can be used without dilution. Almost all the others, like geranium, rosemary, cypress, citrus and many others are generally blended in tiny amounts with carrier oils like olive, almond, apricot seed and vitamin E. All these have their own characteristic aroma and give a luxurious feel to the massage. These oils have many beneficial properties and are a wonderful complement to a good massage.
They relax, awaken and energize the nervous system, increase immunity, combat insomnia and infections, and have an overall healing effect on the body and mind, particularly on the emotions.
Ayurvedic massage also uses sesame, mustard, coconut, olive and castor oil. These oils are all extremely beneficial and can be heat-producing or cooling, depending on which oil is used. Particular herbs and spices mixed or cooked in these oils – according to the season – are recommended for sound health.

Uses and Benefits of Massage Oils

* Mahanarayan taila – for muscular pain, rheumatism, arthritis, gout and stiff joints
* Insect repellent – spike lavender, clove, camphor, garlic and citronella

Contra-indications in Massage

Massage, if judiciously used, helps in healing. However, it should be avoided in the following conditions:
* Inflammation or skin disease
* Purulent (pus) accumulations
* Swellings that might be malignant
* Recent phlebitis (inflammation of veins)
* Recent osteomyelitis (bone infection)
* Recent lymphangitis (lymph node infection)
* Recent thrombosis (clots in blood vessels)
* Severe degrees of hernia
* Very high or very low blood pressure
* Indigestion, constipation, vomiting, fever, very bad cough or cold – (aggravated kapha)
* Heart problems
* Epilepsy
* Pregnancy
* Just after meals

Most people find it very difficult to really relax; they are tense all the time – even in their sleep. The deep relaxation that a massage treatment affords paves the way for the body and mind to heal, as beneficial hormones are secreted by the endocrine system, which in turn affect all other systems in a positive manner.
Massage heals and nurtures not only the recipient, but the masseuse as well.
It is a most amazing and fulfilling experience to connect at such a deep and non-sexual level with another human being. For many people, it makes a tremendous impact when they find that they are received fully and non judgmentally – just as they are. Massage can therefore also be an opening for deep emotional release, as long withheld patterns may emerge, which are then gently released. The intention of the therapist plays a vital role here, and a loving, caring attitude makes a world of difference in turning a massage into a memorable experience.

So treat yourself to some TLC
(tender loving care)…TODAY!!!

The benefits of Agni Sara are incredible - increased circulation to abdominal muscles, tissues and organs

Agni Sara is a cleansing practice – agni means fire, and in this practice the internal fire is stoked, helping to heat up the body from within in order to stimulate digestion and detoxify the bodily systems. Sukhasana or ‘Easy sitting’ pose is a good position for this practice, although many other poses are also appropriate. Then, with that body awareness, move into a more suitable position where the spine can stretch. Agni Sara can also be done standing, with the feet spread wide apart, knees bent in an easy standing-squat and the hands resting on the thighs for support. Whichever position you choose, remember to work towards an erect spine rather than a rounded or hunched one.

The benefits of Agni Sara are incredible – in fact too many to list – but here are some: increased circulation to abdominal muscles, tissues and organs, pelvic muscles, improved elimination of waste and excess fat from around the abdomen, increased energy and elevated mood. Do not practice Agni Sara if you are pregnant, suffering from heart, nervous system, or respiratory ailments, have glaucoma, hiatal hernia, or ulcers of the stomach or intestine.
Process – In this practice, you contract your muscles all the way up from the floor of the pelvis to the diaphragm. This is done after a complete exhalation. From hands and knees position, exhale all the air from the mouth to get really empty. Then with no breath in the body, quickly draw the head and tailbone towards the navel, with the back arching up to the ceiling. The belly is sucked in upwards into the rib cage (this is an intermediate phase), and holding that posture with no breath – for five to ten counts – is Agni Sara. When it is time to inhale, the cat-tuck position and the belly suction is released and a regular inhalation and exhalation is done between sets. I recommend five to ten sets on an empty stomach!

1. Stand erect.
2. Keep a distance of 1-1/2 feet between the feet and place both hands on their respective thighs. Slowly exhale completely.
3. Hold the breath out as is done in Uddiyana. After that, the stomach which has been sucked in due to complete exhalation is to be blown out like a balloon for a count of two seconds without inhaling. Pull the stomach in and again blow it out.
4. Repeat this 4 to 6 times. Now inhale.
5. Practise this kriya every day and gradually increase the number of repetitions. The practice should be relaxing and stimulating and you should be able to feel the heat in your body. After some days the abdominal muscles will become stronger and it will be very easy to incorporate it into your daily practice.
6. This completes one round of Agni Sara. Repeat four or five times.

Remember
Practice on an empty stomach and avoid
doing Agni Sara during pregnancy, menstruation, or after abdominal surgery.
Consult your doctor first if you have any disease of the intestines or pancreas.
Do not practice it for at least four hours after a meal.

Yoga treats the mind and body as one. It treats man as a single entity and believes that

Yoga treats the mind and body as one. It treats man as a single entity and believes that any disease occurring in the body actually originates in the mind. Most diseases are psychosomatic – that is – they travel from the mind to the body. A frustrated and agitated mind will make a person quirky and restless in all his activities. Walking, eating, drinking, sitting – the restlessness of the person will be obvious to a keen observer.
A mind which is not balanced will be unbalanced in most of its work. For example, when he eats food, he won’t be observant of the size of the morsel or whether he has chewed it properly or not. When the mind is in a rush, then food is partaken in an inappropriate way. Food which has not been chewed properly stays in the stomach for a longer duration, and it is very taxing for the digestive system to digest the food properly. Food which stays longer in the stomach and intestines will produce more problems for the body, like indigestion, flatulence, dyspepsia, uneasiness and lethargy. Food should be consumed with great care and thought. What we eat and how we eat is very important and one should be aware of all these things. Eating too much processed food, food with artificial colors and stale food will definitely cause constipation.
‘I am the body and the body is me’ is a thought or feeling that makes a person so unaware, that satisfying the body becomes the only goal in life. Eating to enjoy and earning to buy a variety of foods becomes quite a passion.
I see people thinking about food most of the time. While eating breakfast they worry about what they will eat for lunch, and at lunchtime they plan where to go for dinner. To eat at an expensive restaurant becomes quite a passion about which one even loves to boast. I have heard that in some of the up-market restaurants in New York, Paris and Los Angeles, securing
a reservation is considered a very big achievement, and those who get one feel very proud! Man lives to sustain the body; that he can enjoy a variety of objects and feel happy seems to be the only objective of life.
The vedas says ‘Annam Brahman’. It means, consider food as god and eat as if a great ritual is being performed to appease god.

Treat the body as the truest temple of the lord; keeping it healthy is the foremost duty of every human being. Eat to live – don’t live to eat. Respect our body and worship it by doing yoga asana.
There is a folklore which says that if you are constipated for even a single day, you lose fifteen days of your life! A sadhak should make sure that he or he is never constipated. Eating fiber, drinking ten glasses of water a day, eating green vegetables and fruits, eating an early dinner are some of the life style changes which one should bring about for a totally healthy elimination system.
Hath yoga has some very powerful asanas which can cure constipation and its related problems. Here I will teach you a series of asanas for alleviating constipation.

“Treat the body as the truest temple of the lord;

1). Breathe normally as you stand with your feet firmly on the ground. Allow all muscles to relax. Close your eyes and be aware of your body. Feel the sensations associated with the contact of your feet on the floor.
2). Inhale and then exhale while you slowly bend forward. Lean forward till you can touch your knees, calves, ankles, and feet. Do the movement slowly and in a relaxed manner. From the start to the final position, the movement should be slow, fluid, continuous and mindful. Do not force the stretch. Remain bent over for approximately five seconds or as long as feels comfortable.
3). Be aware of the sensations and the feelings the posture develops in different parts of your body, especially in the area of your back and legs.
4). Feel the movement of your belly.
5). Just relax in the posture. Be aware of your feelings and sensations.
6). Inhale. Return to an upright position by bending your knees slightly and straightening your vertebrae, one at a time. Let your head be the last part of the body to come back into position.

1). Lie on your stomach and place the hands on the floor besides the pectoral muscles.
2). Place the hands palms down, under the shoulders on the floor.
3). Whilst inhaling, without lifting the navel from the floor, raise the chest and head, arching the back. Obtain as complete a stretch of the body as possible.
4). Retain the breath, then exhale while slowly lowering the body to the floor. Rest and repeat two to seven times.
5). Do it two to seven times adding one every 14 days.

Parvati and shiva's marriage is a happy and full of blissful companionship.

‘Daughter of the Mountain,’ Parvati Devi is the primary personification of Shakti Herself. Her consort is Shiva; Her children are Ganesh and Skanda, but in fact she is the mother of all gods and goddesses, of all humanity and of creation itself. Being Shakti’s ‘base form,’ Parvati manifests her wrath as Durga and Kali; and her benevolence as Lakshmi and Saraswati. She is every other goddess as well; when we worship any goddess, or for that matter even any god, we ultimately worship her.

After Shiva’s first wife Sati died, her divine body parts were strewn all over India (all the places where these parts landed became Shakti peeths, or ’seats of the goddess,’ and are now sites of Devi temples) and Shiva turned his back completely on the world, resuming the life of an ascetic in a remote Himalayan cave, while the demon Taraka overran the heavens above and the earth below.With no ‘living’ Shakti (manifest Divinity) to balance Shiva (transcendent Divinity), the Cosmic order was thrown into disarray. And so the gods prayed to Shakti to reincarnate and bring Shiva back into the world, thereby restoring the cosmic balance and saving the world.
Shaivite approaches to Hinduism tend to look upon Parvati primarily as the god’s submissive and obedient wife and helpmate. However, Shaktas focus on Parvati’s equality or even superiority to her consort. Take, for example, the story of the birth of the ‘Ten Mahavidyas’ or ‘Wisdom Goddesses’ of Shakta Tantra. This event occurs while Shiva is living with Parvati in her father’s house. Following an argument, he attempts to walk out on her. Her rage manifests in the form of ten terrifying goddesses who block Shiva’s every exit.

As the scholar David Kinsley explains, “The fact that Parvati is able to physically restrain Shiva, dramatically demonstrates the fact that she is superior in power. The theme of the superiority of the goddess over male deities is common in Shakta texts, and so the story stresses a central Shakta theological principle. The fact that Shiva and Parvati are living in her father’s house in itself makes this point, as it is a tradition in most parts of India for the wife to leave her father’s home upon marriage and become a part of her husband’s lineage and live in his home among his relatives.That Shiva dwells in Parvati’s house implies her superiority in their relationship, which is also demonstrated in her ability – through the Mahavidyas – to thwart Shiva’s will and assert her own.”

It is not necessary to insist upon Parvati’s ’superiority’ in order to realize the power and value of her teachings. As the scholar Ellen Goldberg notes: The story of Parvati’s efforts to win unity with Shiva, is in itself a most powerful allegory of the sadhak’s quest to merge with the Divine. As a yogini (female yoga adept) and tapasvini (female accomplisher of great austerities), Parvati offers all of her devotees an inspiring model by which to master the intricacies of their sadhana. Goldberg writes: “Parvati (Shakti) is the yogini/ tapasvini par excellence. As a rule, the only necessary requirements for the [yoga] path are: access to teachings; a guru; one-pointed dedication to the practices. Parvati fulfills all three requisites. The hatha yoga tradition clearly affirms that the transmission of oral teachings proceeds directly from Shiva to Parvati. This primeval discourse in turn reflects the prototypical relationship between guru and disciple. As a yogini, Parvati performs her austerities (tapas) dutifully – subjecting herself to strict penance like eating tree bark, standing on one foot and so onto win or unite with her beloved Shiva.” “Her ascetic disciplines prepare her for a progressive ascent through body, speech and mind and lead her via preparatory and purificatory practices, to the higher attainments of yoga realization. Once her karma is dissolved, Parvati, as a model disciple, is drawn into deeper and more subtle forms of meditation, leading to the merging of herself and Shiva in the form and figure of Ardhanariswara.”
